Demand grows for bus and rail passes for the independent traveller

New Mexico bus pass

STA Travel has just introduced a new flexible hop on and off bus pass in Mexico, which takes travellers through Mexico's colonial towns, the jungle, archaeological sites and Caribbean beaches.  The bus route starts in Mexico City and takes in thirteen destinations, including Puerto Escondido, the Agua Azul waterfall and Chichen Itza, before ending in Cancun.

Included in the price of the pass are a number of guided adventures, including a guided eco walk in the cacti forest of the Zapotitian Desert, a 4x4 motorbike ride in Mountain Cloud Forest and surfing lessons with a local surf guru in Puerto Escondido. The bus stops in each destination at least every two days, allowing passengers to explore Mexico at their own pace.

Board the Bullet Train

Book a seven day Japanese rail pass and get unlimited travel on all Japan's railway lines and affiliated buses and ferries, for the same price as a return ticket between Tokyo and Kyoto.  The Japanese rail pass is specifically designed for travellers and can be bought for seven,14 or 21 days consecutive travel, allowing you to see as much as possible of this fascinating country.  A seven day pass costs from £142.

For those, who want to explore a specific area of Japan for longer, there is a regional rail pass.  The Japan Rail Pass West offers unlimited travel in the larger, more westerly areas of Osaka, Okayama and Hiroshima.  The pass includes travel on bullet trains and the Miyajima ferry line in Hiroshima.  Rail passes can be bought for four or eight consecutive days and cost £100 and £150.

Explore Africa by bus

See the best of South Africa with a flexible hop on hop off bus pass, which travels along the coast from Cape Town to Durban. A Greyhound Australia bus pass allows you to buy a number of kilometres, which are valid for twelve months.  The Greyhound route covers 1,100 destinations within Australia and travellers can take as many trips as they like to where they like, to use up their kilometres.  The passes range from 500 to 20,000 kms, with a 10,000 kms pass costing £541.  Flights to Sydney with STA Travel  cost from £621 with Qantas.
